Armand Guéry (1850-1912) - Lot 40
Armand Guéry (1850-1912) "Champagne Evening" Oil on canvas signed lower left, numbered F17, titled and countersigned on the back. Size 92 x 130 cm Article Musées des Arts de Reims ► https://musees-reims.fr/fr/centres-de-ressources/carnet-de-recherche/article/enfin-un-talent-reconnu. We would like to thank M Charles Poulain for passing on the following valuable information: "From reading this label "peinture mate, procédé spécial" I think this canvas was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français de1908 before coming to the Salon de Lyon. Of course one must always be cautious since the dimensions of the works exhibited in these two salons are not known, and we don't know of any photographs, but the titles are identical." Here's what he noted about the Paris Salon in 1908: "During this painful walk, Saint-Georges noticed an enhanced gouache by Guéry: le Soir en Champagne where Millet's inspiration is real, but to which we prefer the submissions in the painting section (Saint-Georges, 1908, Courrier de la Champagne, July 11). Edouard Turon gives a fuller description of the subject. Mr. Armand Guéry again offers us Un Soir en Champagne, in gouache, beautifully enhanced with an old shepherd guarding a flock. An impression of calm and freshness emanates from this work, already drowning in twilight (Turon, 1908, June 20). He concludes: "We have had many opportunities to congratulate Mr. Armand Guéry. It is a new joy for us to be able to tell him once again how much we admire his talent" (Turon, 1908, June 20). Bibliography: Catalog L.
