POTTINGER (Henry). - Voyages dans le Béloutchistan et le Sindhy, suivi de la description géographique et historique de ces deux pays, avec une carte. Paris, Gide fils, 1818. Two in-8 volumes with frontispiece, VIII, 465 pp. and (1) f. ; 381, (1) pp. and map, contemporary binding in shagreened calf, ornate smooth spines, yellow edges. First edition in French. Engraved frontispiece and large fold-out map by the author. General, administrator and diplomat, Henry Pottinger (1789-1856) was one of the most important figures in colonial England. He began his career as a cadet in the Indies in 1804. Noted for his bravery and intelligence, he rose rapidly through the ranks, earning the title of Baronet in 1839, after the Afghan War. The book, first published in English in 1816, contains the account of the expedition he led in 1810 with Captain Charles Christie to explore the frontier region between India and Persia, a possible route for Russian penetration of India. This was one of the earliest manifestations of the long political rivalry between the British Empire and Russia for control of Central Asia and the Near East, which came to be known as the "Great Game". A superb, fresh copy. Minimal spotting on the second cover of one volume. Chadenat, 5112.
