Polish naturalist Nicolas Prjevalski (1839-1888) served as an officer in the Russian army and explored Central Asia in the 1870s. From his travels in the wilds of Mongolia and northern Tibet, he brought back numerous observations and samples of fauna, flora, minerals, descriptions of geography and ethnography, etc., and gave his name to a species of wild Asian horse.
