Naval tromblon. A heavy bronze cannon with a 5-sided barrel - Lot 172
Naval tromblon. A heavy bronze cannon with a 5-sided barrel measuring 16 cm, which flares out sharply toward the muzzle. The left side bears three hallmark and master gunsmith’s marks typical of London in the late 18th/early 19th century. Round-bodied lock plate, steel pan with a spark guard, and a round, swan-neck-shaped hammer (the flint and its screw may have been replaced); roller-type firing spring; functional lock plate, marked “St Etienne en forêt.” Light walnut stock with a trophy of arms decoration on the rear of the butt plate. Steel butt plate, scalloped and engraved with a floral design; all steel fittings are decorated in the same style. Rear steel rail. This firearm is highly representative of the practices of the era, which involved mounting an English-made bronze barrel on a French frame with a locally made, signed lock plate. Total length 79.5 cm, barrel length 38.5 cm. Category D.
