Tobacco Jar - Lot 36
Tobacco Jar 19th-century earthenware A large and whimsical tobacco jar depicting a small trade: “Street shoe shiner.” The figure, with his head tilted and a sad smile, is dressed in 19th-century fashion and wears a gray apron to protect his clothes. On the ground, against his right leg, one of his boots serves as a match holder. The top of the pot, which doubles as a lid, has a compartment for a moistening sponge. No mark, but it could be Staffordshire, like the identical piece—with less refined decoration—listed in Horowitz under number 516, in which the boot serving as a match holder is positioned against the left leg. This model is also similar to the one in the Victoria and Albert Museum, dated 1840–1850. Restoration at the neck. H 29 cm
