Tobacco Jar
Wood, possibly English, circa 1880
A large tobacco jar depicting, standing on a wooden base designed to mimic the rough texture of earth, a full-length, potbellied figure leaning on a cane, wearing a frock coat and a wide-brimmed hat, and smoking a pipe. Is this a Dutchman or an Alsatian?
The pipe stem is broken, and it appears that the base was screwed onto the tree trunk supporting the figure from behind at a later date, as the same model exists without a base. Note that the interior of this vase has been retrofitted, by hand, into a cigar humidor.
No markings.
