Tobacco Jar - Lot 57
Tobacco Jar 19th-century Bohemian glazed black terracotta A pair of two large composite figures, of the same design, depicting a couple of Oriental figures sitting cross-legged on a pedestal draped with a gold-embroidered fabric, which serves as the tobacco jar. The man, wearing a turban and a fur-trimmed jacket, smokes a long pipe; the woman, whose headdress reveals large earrings, gazes at her companion in a languid and graceful pose. Marked on the base “W & S” for William Schiller and Sons, and the numbers 57 for the man and 58 for the woman. From the Seita collection (lot 350 of the Piasa auction at Drouot on September 18, 2009) but formerly part of the collection of Eugène Jance (label 773), who, as a pastry chef and later a tobacco shop owner in Marseille, collected many tobacco-related objects. A large part of his collection was purchased by the Seita Museum in 1977. Signs of wear and restoration. H 31.5 cm
