Galvanized metal, Germany, mid-19th century - Lot 111
Galvanized metal, Germany, mid-19th century
A very rare and curious tobacco jar, made of metal obtained by electroplating* from a drinking mug—probably made of ivory—depicting village life with numerous characters: a horseman, a cart driver, a tavern scene, a rotisserie cook, and even a mother with her children—all set against a highly detailed backdrop of houses and trees. On the lid, very finely decorated with flowers and leaves, a potbellied, drunken figure—who has fallen asleep against a tree trunk, a wine mug in hand—serves as a handle.
Unmarked but listed under number 319 in the catalog for the exhibition “La fleur de mal” at Trianon Bagatelle in 1994 (curator: Dominique Delalande).
* Electrotyping is an electrolytic reproduction process.
