A very rare and curious tobacco jar, made of metal obtained by electroforming* from a drinking mug—probably made of ivory—depicting village life with numerous characters: a horseman, a cooper, a tavern scene, a roaster, and even a mother and her children, all set against a highly detailed backdrop of houses and trees. On the lid, which is very finely decorated with flowers and leaves, a potbellied, drunken figure—who has fallen asleep against a tree trunk, a wine mug in hand—serves as the handle. Galvanized metal, Germany, mid-19th century No mark, but listed under number 319 in the catalog for the exhibition “La fleur de mal” at Trianon Bagatelle in 1994 (exhibition curator: Dominique Delalande).
