Lead, 19th century - Lot 121
Lead, 19th century Octagonal lead tobacco jar. The body of the jar, framed by a guilloché band at the top and bottom, is decorated on both the front and back with an identical scene: a young Black man serves a European-style man wearing a doublet and ruff, seated in an armchair and smoking a calumet. On the lid, a Mamluk wearing a turban, seated cross-legged and smoking a hookah, serves as the knob. Note the internal pewter lid for tamping down the tobacco. A nearly identical jar is illustrated on Plate 2, Figure 7, in Reginald Myer’s book *Old Chats on English Tobacco Jars*. Typical ½ Leadjar, England. Marked, inside the jar and on the base, with the diamond mark of the “British Patent Office,” indicating that two designs for this Class E object (lead and tin) were registered on May 8, 1872. Polychrome, with wear and deformation. H 15 cm
