19th-century glazed pipe clay - Lot 126
19th-century glazed pipe clay
Small tobacco jar, monochrome brown with a slight sheen and a patina from use, depicting an acorn topped by a beetle, with outstretched legs, which serves as the lid; the body is decorated with a wreath of oak leaves spread across a speckled background. The phallic reference is evident here, given the double etymological meaning of the word for the acorn, and allows for a “risqué” transition between allegories of Nature and those concerning Women and Love.
Marked with the number 112 and the initials C L & T, the meaning of which is undetermined.
Repair to the lid. Missing sections, brown wear.
H 11.5 cm
