A tobacco jar depicting an elegant Second Empire-era woman, shown full-length, her shoulders covered by an embroidered capeline with a hood and gold tassels, wearing a crinoline and a muff. In a graceful gesture, she reveals her right ankle and ankle boot—a very daring look for the time. The decoration on her clothing, in shades of pastel blue, pink, yellow, and green, is quite refined and is reminiscent of that on the snuffbox in Figure 38, of which this piece appears to be—smaller in size and less ridiculous—the feminine counterpart. Probably French. Painted biscuit porcelain, 19th century Marked on the bottom of the jar and in pen with the number 47 (the mold number) and on the inside of the lid with the number 2. H 19 cm
