Beauvais stoneware, late 19th century - Lot 134
Beauvais stoneware, late 19th century A painted earthenware pot with a light glaze; though crudely made, it features an extremely complex relief decoration depicting all aspects of domestic life. On the body, a shepherdess, with her goat at her feet, is being courted by a young farmer who offers her a bouquet of flowers, all set against a landscape of apple trees—without the serpent—and a brick house with a shingle roof. The lid depicts a village overlooked by a ruined watchtower, accessible via a staircase; the hollowed-out interior of the tower serves as a container for matches. No mark. Chips. H 19 cm
