A large painting depicting a Neapolitan shepherd, a bottle in hand, leaning against a large barrel used as a tobacco jar. The details are meticulously rendered, particularly the shepherd’s costume, his hat covering a scarf, his mandolin, the gourd hanging from his belt, and the white handkerchief peeking out of his vest pocket. Also note the delicate depiction of insects—ladybugs and others—on the barrel. Let’s not forget that at that time, Italy was still considered an “exotic” country. Painted bisque, mid-19th century Marked “A C” in a cartouche, like Pot 32, perhaps standing for Chauvigné, Alluaud, or Ardant. The upper part of the violin is missing. H 26.5 cm
