Painted biscuit, mid-19th century - Lot 140
Painted biscuit, mid-19th century Large piece depicting a Neapolitan shepherd, a bottle in his hand, leaning against a large barrel used as a tobacco jar. The decoration is very meticulous; in particular, the shepherd’s costume, his hat covering a scarf, his mandolin, the gourd hanging from his belt, and the white handkerchief peeking out of his vest pocket. Also note the delicate rendering of the insects—ladybugs and others—on the barrel. Let us not forget that at that time, Italy was still considered an “exotic” country. Marked “A C” in a cartouche, like jar 32, perhaps standing for Chauvigné, Alluaud, or Ardant. The upper part of the violin is missing. H 26.5 cm
