Black glazed earthenware, 19th-century England - Lot 156
Black glazed earthenware, 19th-century England A large and magnificent tobacco jar resting on a tray. On one side of the jar’s body, a sailing ship stands out in black relief with a few touches of red; on the other, a steam locomotive with its tender. Its extraordinary lid features a wreath of standing English sailors, entwined in a giant ship’s anchor, holding each other by the elbows and drinking. This black pot, accented with just a touch of color, is typical of F. Gerbing in association with William Schiller and Sohn. Marked “F GW 178” on the bottom of the cup and “F G W 436” on the bottom of the saucer for F. Gerbing, William Schiller and Sohn. H 30 cm
