Glazed earthenware, dated 1898 Large rectangular pot made of red glazed earthenware typical of Thiviers, commemorating the loss of Alsace and Lorraine in 1870. On all four sides of the body, a relief decoration featuring the busts of a woman from Lorraine and a woman from Alsace, along with the coats of arms of the cities of Metz and Mulhouse. On the lid, set against a hollowed-out tree trunk that serves as a match holder, a reclining dog symbolizes loyalty, sadness, and the hope for better days. Marked on and under the lid: Pagneux* 1898 Lyon. * Pagneux was a potter at the Thiviers pottery who specialized in ornamentation. H 31 cm
