Polychrome glazed earthenware
Bohemia, 19th century
A large-scale work by Bernard Bloch depicting a Russian soldier in an astrakhan cap, standing against a low stone wall, shaking hands with a French soldier, who is crushing a silent cannon with the sole of his boot. At their feet, in front of a scraper, a hollowed-out drum serves as a container for unused matches, and a depression dug into the ground collects the used ones.
