19th-century Bohemian polychrome terracotta - Lot 171
19th-century Bohemian polychrome terracotta A figure in brown terracotta, identical to the previous one, this time reading the “New York Herald.” This model is a recurring motif in depictions of tobacco jars and was reproduced by Joseph Strnact and Johann Maresch in a version nearly 30 cm tall with “Montour” as the newspaper’s title, and especially by Conta and Böhme, who produced it in a wide range of colors and with various newspaper titles (see the previous jar). This one, very finely sculpted and marked “William Schiller & Sons” with the number 98, appears, according to Horowitz, to be the rarest and likely the original. Marked on the bottom “WS & S” and the number 98. Signs of wear. H 25.4 cm
