Fine Sarreguemines stoneware, third quarter of the 19th century
Large, urn-shaped tobacco jar made of fine Sarreguemines stoneware, beige in color.
The body is carved with four oval medallions, surrounded by pearls and arabesques, depicting four figures smoking: a Zouave with his pipe, a hetaera with a hookah, an elegant Romantic woman with a pipe, and a gentleman with his cigar. Between each medallion are four brown antique caryatids in relief. On the lid, a Mameluke, sitting cross-legged and holding a long calumet, serves as a handle.
Engraved on the base are the words “Sarreguemines,” the number 87, and the letter B.
