A humorous tobacco jar depicting a priest in a black cassock, wearing a clerical hat with curved brims, crushed by a voluminous red Phrygian cap representing the Republic. One cannot help but think of little Father Combe, Jules Ferry’s secular school system, the 1905 law separating church and state, and the great Voltaire, who added “ec l’inf” beneath his signature—short for “écraser l’infâme” (crush the infamous); the infamous being, of course, the Holy Apostolic and Roman Church (anticlerical).
