Glazed black terracotta, 19th century A large, whimsical tobacco jar depicting a large, smiling man—almost blissful—with his sideburns blowing in the wind, carrying his enormous belly on a wheelbarrow. Against this black background, only his hands, his satisfied face, and the front of his shirt stand out in beige. Here we see, depicted in caricature, John Bull, the embodiment of capitalism. No mark, but comparable—in black—to the chocolate-brown example with blue eyes, listed as No. 347 in the Horowitz catalog and signed “W. Schiller and Son.” England? H 22.5 cm
