Tobacco Jar - Lot 195
Tobacco Jar Earthenware, late 19th century A large composite piece consisting of a midnight-blue drum, strung with golden cords, which serves as the tobacco jar. On the lid, a zany, caricatured clown with spiky red hair, wearing pink tights, green shorts, and red shoes, sits cross-legged, holding a cymbal in one hand and a drumstick in the other. His exaggeratedly joyful expression, which barely conceals genuine distress, perpetuates the myth of the sad clown. No markings. Italy? Some signs of wear. H 33 cm
