Tobacco Jar
A small caricatured head of a man with slanted blue eyes and a prominent nose above a mustache, smoking a cigar. On his receding hairline, where only a ring of frizzy black hair remains, two small horns are beginning to grow. This may simply be a depiction of a devil, but one cannot help but see in it—as in the previous figure—an illustration of the anti-Semitism so widespread at that time.
Polychrome terracotta, late 19th–early 20th century
Marked on the base with the number 5978 and the word “Germany.” Formerly in the collection of Eugène Jance (label J 843). Seita Collection (lot 145 from the auction in Thiers on October 4, 2009).
