Tobacco Jar - Lot 198
Tobacco Jar Polychrome terracotta, late 19th–early 20th century A small caricatured head of a man with slanted blue eyes and a prominent nose above a mustache, smoking a cigar. On his receding hairline, where only a ring of curly black hair remains, two small horns are beginning to grow. This may simply be a depiction of a devil, but one cannot help but see in it—as in the previous figure—an illustration of the anti-Semitism so widespread at that time. Marked on the back with the number 5978 and the word “Germany.” Formerly in the collection of Eugène Jance (label J 843). Seita Collection (lot 145 from the auction in Thiers on October 4, 2009). H 11 cm
