Brown glazed terracotta, circa 1860 - Lot 202
Brown glazed terracotta, circa 1860
A truly remarkable and rare tobacco jar depicting a crouching Napoleon III, weighed down by the weight of his crown, puffing on a long calumet—even though the emperor, nicknamed “Napoleon the Little” by Victor Hugo, smoked only cigarettes. The sculpting on this monochrome dark brown piece, with a few golden highlights, is particularly meticulous, especially in the depiction of his thick hair and the drapery of the folds in the toga that envelops him.
Provenance unknown. Frantz F. Gerbing? W. Schiller and Sons? Marked with the number 349.
Wear to the polychrome finish.
Height: 20 cm
