Glossy clay pipe bowl, Italy, late 19th century Large tobacco jar, matte on the outside, brown glazed on the inside, depicting a standing, potbellied man with his hands behind his back; his head, framed by a black beard that extends below his chin, could be that of Count Cavour. This very rare and beautiful object—perhaps a one-of-a-kind piece—also holds great sentimental and personal value, as it was the first item purchased for this collection some twenty years ago… simply because it was such a beautiful object. Provenance unknown. Mark “B” on the inside of the lid, possibly standing for “BB.” Previous repair and restoration + crack. Height: 35.3 cm
