Large tobacco jar, matte on the outside, glazed brown on the inside, depicting a standing, potbellied man with his hands behind his back; his head, framed by a black beard that extends below his chin, could be that of Count Cavour. This very rare and beautiful object—perhaps a one-of-a-kind piece—also holds great sentimental and personal value, as it was the first item purchased for this collection. Glazed pipe clay, Italy, late 19th century Provenance unknown. Mark “B” on the inside of the lid, possibly standing for “BB.” Old repair and restoration + crack. Height: 35.3 cm
