Painted and glazed Bohemian porcelain, late 19th century - Lot 212
Painted and glazed Bohemian porcelain, late 19th century Impressive tobacco jars depicting an Asian couple kneeling in a pose that may suggest prayer but could just as easily be a mischievous warning: “Beware.” Their attire—consisting of a flat hat tied under the chin and a sky-blue and pink kimono—is richly decorated with exotic flowers. At the back, extending well beyond the brim of the hat, a long braid of black hair twists mischievously. Note that there is a female counterpart to this figure. Engraved on the inside of the lid is the Conta family crest, depicting an armed arm brandishing a knife, which indicates its origin: the “Conta and Böhme Fabrik.” Minor imperfections. Height: 26 cm
