Glazed Bohemian terracotta, late 19th century - Lot 217
Glazed Bohemian terracotta, late 19th century
An extraordinary and rare tobacco jar—perhaps the rarest in this collection—oval in shape, depicting a Venetian gondola. It is chocolate brown in color and richly decorated with red, black, and green scrollwork, with the stern adorned by a triton’s head. The gondolier sits at the rear, on a match compartment equipped with a scraper. In the center is the passenger cabin, closed by curtains, whose laced roof serves as a lid; this forms the tobacco jar itself. At the front is the place for the mast (missing). All the parts making up this tobacco jar are removable.
Marked with the number 138 and the initials WS&S for William Schiller & Son.
Damage and missing parts.
Dimensions: 19 x 37 cm
