Mid-20th-century Longwy earthenware A superb tobacco jar made of crackled, glazed Longwy earthenware, shaped like an ointment box of the kind found in pharaonic tombs. The very delicate and colorful decoration, featuring turquoise, brown, yellow, pink, green, and midnight blue glazes, evokes Horus and other decorative motifs from ancient Egypt, reimagined in a 1930s style. Even more so than with the jar shown in Figure 87, this piece exemplifies the extraordinary artistry made possible by the process developed in 1872 by Amédée de Caranza. Marked on the base with the coat of arms of the city of Longwy, France, and the number 8 in relief. H 15.5 cm
